«Standing on Gold: Simone Forti»—This work-in-progress documentary film includes never-before-screened work and choice photos from Forti’s own personal archive. The films source footage is from an interview with Simone at her home in LA, as well as a workshop she held in Portland in 2013. The film discusses the workshop and how exercises for the workshop were developed. The intention in making this film is to educate: to help expose Simone Forti’s work and creative process to a new generation of dance artists and to a larger audience. However, this is not the full story of her life--that would take far longer than a 30-minute documentary.

Simone’s paradigm for dancing counterpoints long-held approaches. Having her voice present in the current landscape of dance practice offers both a historical presence and stays grounded in current contemporary action. In her eighties, Simone Forti continues to perform improvised choreography in international settings, providing an opportunity to examine questions of “What is a dancer’s body?” “What is a dancer’s relationship to that body as we age?” and “What can the somatic and improvised approach to composition contribute to the field of dance at this moment?”

«Moving History: Portland Contemporary Dance Past and Present» (2017) explores six decades of Portland’s contemporary dance history through interviews and archival footage. Working with interviews from founding company members and archival performance footage, the film explores how today’s dancers stand on the shoulders of decades of performers and choreographers who established Portland’s flourishing community. Beginning with the inception of the Portland Dance Theater and continuing through the Reed College Summer Dance Workshop, Art Quake, Conduit, Performance Works NW, and White Bird, among many others. 72 minutes.

These screenings are a PWNW Alembic Co-Productio.
