French science-fiction writer Sylvie Denis will be at the bookshop on May 17, 2018 for a public conversation with American science-fiction writer Molly Gloss.

Join us for a conversation between two nationally acclaimed authors in France and the US who will share their approach of literature, their vision of the future of the planet, climate change, and the importance of time… Followed by Q&A and book signing.

The discussion will be moderated by Annabelle Dolidon, professor at Portland State University and science-fiction specialist. Two short stories translated by students from the English Department at Portland State University will be available to the public, as well as French copies of Sylvie Denis’ collec...tion of short stories Jardins Virtuels.

Sylvie Denis, a former English teacher, was born in 1963 and lives in Cognac. A short story writer, novelist, essayist, anthologist, editor in chief of Cyberdreams magazine, she is also a translator of science fiction and of fantasy authors, namely Greg Ewan, Stephen Baxter and Alastair Reynolds, among others. With so many strings to her bow, Sylvie is often considered as the “Grande Dame of French science fiction”! Her novels and short stories (awarded the Solaris and Rosny Aîné prizes) are clearly written with emphasis given to the theme of new technology and its impact on human society. She also likes to draw and creates digital collages and illustrations under the name of Magmaplasma.

Molly Gloss is a fourth-generation Oregonian who lives in Portland. She is the bestselling author of The Jump-Off Creek, The Dazzle of Day, Wild Life, The Hearts of Horses and Falling From Horses. Her work has earned numerous awards, including an Oregon Book Award, a Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, the PEN West Fiction Prize, the James Tiptree Jr. Award; and a Whiting Writers Award.
