Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church of Portland
3138 N Vancouver Ave, Portland, Oregon 97227
On Saturday, January 13th and Sunday, January 14th, 2018, the Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church will host our annual Drum Major Celebration!
Please save these dates, come on out, and help us honor high-school students of achievement and standout civil servants and community leaders on the weekend prior to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Our Salute to Greatness student scholarship and civic awards luncheon will happen January 13th, 2018, from 12:00 – 2:00 pm in the Dr. & Mrs. O.B. Williams Fellowship Hall; while our Empower the Dream interfaith gathering and speaker series will happen January 14th, 2018, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Saturday’s keynote speaker will be Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. Sunday’s keynote, Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith, will be joined by speakers including Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish, Oregon Senator Lew Frederick, and former Senator Margaret Carter.
For those new to our community, and/or new to this event, the term “drum major” is inspired by a sermon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave on February 4th, 1968, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. In his address, given two short months before he was assassinated, Dr. King prophetically spoke of his own eulogy, saying, “Let me be remembered as a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness.”
Growing from this fertile soil, our Drum Major Celebration honors local high-school students of noteworthy achievement, along with civic and community leaders who have had a significant, positive impact on our city.
In times like these, it’s imperative that we embody the spirit, character, and courage of Dr. King. Now more than ever, we must lift each other up. We must shine a bright light on the qualities that can heal the world, and on the women and men who embody these qualities. Now is the time, this is the place, we are the people.
On January 13th and 14th, 2018, let us move the needle together. Mark your calendars. And we hope to see you there!
Blessed are the change makers,
Pastor J.W. Matt Hennessee
