Otter lovers, take note!
The Oregon Zoo will host Otter Awareness Day on Sept. 17, with activities aimed at connecting visitors with two of the most playful species at the zoo, while highlighting the critical role otters play in ecosystems.
While river otters can be found in both salt and fresh water, sea otters only live in salt water, and are considered marine mammals. Both are native to Oregon, although wild sea otters have not established colonies off the Oregon coast since 1907. Both otters are also indicator species for healthy ecosystems.
